The Crisis of Modern Dating

1. The Internet Completely Changed Dating

Modern dating is creating a lot of anger, loneliness, confusion, and resentment between men and women. The internet completely changed how people meet, compare themselves, and choose partners. Dating apps, social media, porn, influencers, and unlimited options have created a dating environment that humans were probably never designed to handle. To be clear, this is an extreme framing to make a larger point. It is obviously a generalization of both men and women. Not every man or woman acts this way. There are still healthy relationships, great marriages, loyal women, honorable men, and normal people trying their best. But even if this argument is exaggerated, I think it explains a lot of what is happening in modern dating. Before dating apps and social media, most people met through school, work, family, friends, church, local events, or their neighborhood. Your options were mostly limited to the people who lived around you. A woman in a small town might know twenty single men near her age. A man might know twenty single women. Since both people had fewer options, they were more likely to give normal people a real chance and actually try to build something together. The internet completely changed this. Now you can open an app and see hundreds or thousands of possible partners. Social media also allows you to watch the lives of the richest, hottest, and most successful people in the world every single day. This creates the feeling that someone better is always one swipe away. A woman may meet a kind, responsible man with a normal job who genuinely wants a relationship, but compare him to the tall, rich, attractive men she sees online. Men do the same thing. A man may meet a normal, caring woman but compare her to models, influencers, adult performers, and heavily edited women online. Both sides slowly start believing they deserve someone far above the average person.

2. Attention Is Unequal and Temporary Access Creates Confusion

Dating apps do not spread attention equally. The hottest men and women receive a huge amount of attention, while average people receive much less. A very attractive woman may receive hundreds of messages. A very attractive man may have many dating choices. An average man may struggle to get one match, while an average woman may receive attention but not always from men who want to seriously commit to her. This creates a lot of confusion. A woman may be able to date a very attractive or successful man for a short period of time. That does not always mean that man wants to marry her or build a future with her. Temporary access is not the same thing as long-term commitment. Imagine someone lets you test-drive a Lamborghini for the weekend. Driving it for two days does not mean you can actually afford to own it. In the same way, dating someone briefly does not mean that person sees you as a serious long-term partner. This can become extremely painful later. Someone may spend years dating exciting people who never planned to commit. As they get older, they may feel angry, lied to, used, or disappointed when the serious relationship they expected never appears. Some women then quickly become radicalized and start broadly hating men because of the situation they find themselves in. They may feel men used them, wasted their time, lied to them, or refused to commit. They may slowly start believing that men are selfish, immature, dishonest, emotionally unavailable, or simply terrible. The internet makes this anger much stronger. When a person watches hundreds of videos saying that men are trash, every bad dating experience starts feeling like proof. Their frustration with a few men slowly becomes hatred toward men as a whole.

3. The Safe Option Is Being Rejected

Most of this anger is fairly harmless. Maybe someone complains online, makes jokes, becomes bitter, or becomes more defensive while dating. The traditional outcome may have been that a woman eventually settled down with a kind and dependable man near her own age. He may not be the hottest or highest-status man she ever dated, but he may be willing to offer loyalty, stability, marriage, and a family. The internet is now disrupting this outcome too. Male dating influencers are teaching men to recognize this pattern. They warn men that they may become the safe option after a woman has already spent years chasing more exciting men. Some men are now refusing to play that role. They do not want to feel like the man who was chosen only after every other option failed. They may avoid marriage, refuse commitment, or become suspicious of women with long and complicated dating histories. This creates even more panic, anger, and resentment. The woman may feel unfairly judged for her past. The man may feel like he is being asked to accept a deal that does not benefit him. Both people feel cheated by the system. The woman may think, “Why should my past destroy my future?” The man may think, “Why should I offer commitment now when I was invisible before?” Both sides feel like the other person is asking them to accept an unfair deal. The woman wants to be judged by who she is today. The man wants to know why he should provide security and commitment after years of being ignored. This is where resentment starts building on both sides.

4. Lonely Men Are Escaping in Different Ways

At the exact same time, many average and below-average men are becoming extremely lonely and resentful. They struggle to get matches, dates, attention, affection, love, or sex. Many of them feel completely invisible to women. A man may have a job, treat people respectfully, take care of himself, and still receive almost no attention on dating apps. Meanwhile, he watches a small group of attractive men receive endless options. After years of this, he may start believing that modern dating is completely unfair and hopeless. Some men stop dating. Some become addicted to porn because it gives them a temporary escape from being lonely. Some retreat into video games. Some become angry online. Others start traveling to different countries to find women. These men may believe women in other countries are more traditional, more open to marriage, or simply more interested in average men. This is one reason the passport-bro movement and international dating have grown so much. In many other countries, some of these lonely men may also visit sex workers. The United States is different because prostitution is mostly illegal, heavily judged, and extremely expensive compared with many other countries. Since America is a rich society, the cost of paying for sex can be completely unreasonable for the average man. This leaves many lonely American men with very few legal and affordable outlets. Their loneliness may turn into porn addiction, bitterness, political extremism, hatred of women, or complete withdrawal from society.

5. Society Confuses the Escape With the Cause

I think American society has badly misunderstood the real force behind the Red Pill, the manosphere, and the general anger of young men. Porn, video games, and social media are easy surface-level explanations, but they do not fully explain the deeper pain. Those things may be symptoms instead of the actual disease. Imagine a lonely young man who plays video games for eight hours every day. Society looks at him and says the video games caused his isolation. But maybe he started playing video games because he already felt unwanted, unsuccessful, rejected, and invisible in real life. The video game may be his escape from the problem, not the original cause of the problem. The same may be true for porn. Porn can absolutely damage motivation, relationships, and expectations. But many men may turn to porn because they already feel locked out of normal dating and intimacy. If society only attacks the escape without understanding the pain underneath it, the problem will never go away. It would be like seeing someone drink every night and only blaming the alcohol without asking what pain they are trying to numb. The habit may make the problem worse, but it may not be where the problem started. A lot of young men do not feel needed, respected, desired, or useful. They may not have strong friendships, clear purpose, good jobs, healthy male role models, or any realistic path toward marriage and family. When society ignores those deeper problems and simply calls them losers, addicts, or incels, it may push them even further into the exact spaces everyone claims to fear.

6. Women Gained Modern Freedom While Men Kept Traditional Duties

If I had to explain the main reason behind male anger toward modern dating, it would be this. Women have gained modern freedom while men are still expected to follow many traditional rules. Women now have more freedom to date casually, explore their sexuality, focus on their careers, delay marriage, reject traditional gender roles, and live however they want. At the same time, many men still feel expected to ask women out, plan the date, pay for dinner, make the first move, deal with rejection, earn enough money, provide protection, buy the ring, propose marriage, and take financial responsibility for the family. A lot of men believe this is an unfair deal. They feel women are allowed to reject traditional expectations while men are still judged by traditional male standards. Imagine two workers doing the same job. One worker is allowed to remove half of their responsibilities. The other worker must keep doing everything from the old system. The second worker will eventually ask, “Why are the rules modern for you but still traditional for me?” This is how many men see modern dating. Another part of the argument is that society has framed female sexual behavior as being the same as male sexual behavior. According to this view, society tells women they should have the same sexual freedom as men while still expecting men to behave traditionally by offering commitment, protection, provision, and marriage. The argument is that this is a false equivalence because men and women may face different biological risks, emotional reactions, dating outcomes, and social consequences from sex. This is obviously a highly debated subject. Some people believe men and women should be judged by the exact same standards. Other people believe equal value does not mean both sexes behave or experience sex in the exact same way. The larger problem is that modern society destroyed many old rules without replacing them with clear new rules. Everyone now enters dating with completely different expectations, and nobody clearly explains the rules, so both people eventually feel used.

7. Marriage No Longer Feels Like a Good Deal

This is also why Red Pill and manosphere influencers give advice like no dinner on the first date, walk away if there is no sex within three dates, do not become emotionally invested too quickly, do not be overly nice, and do not believe kindness automatically creates attraction. The argument is that traditional courtship only works when both people are following traditional values. Imagine a man spending weeks planning dates, paying for meals, and proving his commitment while the woman sees the relationship as casual and is still speaking to multiple men. He may feel like he is making a traditional investment inside a completely nontraditional system. Male dating influencers tell him to reduce his investment until the woman proves that she is equally interested. This does not mean men should become cruel, dishonest, or disrespectful. It means many men are becoming more careful because they are scared of being used. Traditional marriage required both men and women to make serious sacrifices. Men were often expected to work, provide money, protect the family, and remain responsible even when life became difficult. Women were often expected to raise children, manage the home, support their husbands, and give up some personal freedom. Both sides also received major benefits. Men received family, companionship, respect, purpose, and a connection to their children. Women received commitment, protection, stability, and support while raising children. Neither side got everything they wanted. Marriage worked like a long-term partnership where both people gave up something to build something much bigger. Today, many of those roles are unclear. Women can support themselves financially and may no longer need a man for survival. Men may still feel expected to provide, but they no longer believe they receive loyalty, respect, peace, or authority in return. ROI means return on investment. Many men no longer believe marriage offers a positive ROI. They see marriage as requiring money, loyalty, legal risk, and the possibility of losing property or access to their children after divorce, while the rewards feel uncertain. Whether every fear is accurate is not even the main point. The point is that many men believe these risks are real, and people make decisions based on what they believe will happen.

8. The Real Crisis Is the Death of Trust

The dating crisis may create massive political and social consequences. Young men who feel unwanted, ignored, blamed, and completely forgotten may become politically extreme. They may believe neither political party offers them any real solution. Politicians tell them to work hard, get married, and start families, but they may respond that housing is too expensive, wages are too low, women do not want them, marriage feels too risky, dating apps are destroying their confidence, and nobody cares about male loneliness. When people believe normal politics cannot fix their problems, they may become attracted to extreme ideas. Some may start supporting the removal of women’s rights or forcing society back into strict gender roles. These ideas are obviously dangerous and unhealthy, but simply laughing at these men may make their anger worse. The deepest problem may be that men and women no longer trust each other. Many women believe men want sex without responsibility. Many men believe women want commitment without sacrifice. Women fear being used for their bodies. Men fear being used for money, protection, and stability. Both sides collect stories that support what they already believe, and the internet keeps showing them more of the same. A woman watches endless videos about cheating, abuse, and emotionally unavailable men. A man watches endless videos about divorce, betrayal, rejection, and women using men. Eventually, both people start believing the worst examples represent the entire opposite sex. Bad experiences create fear. Fear creates defensive behavior. Defensive behavior creates more bad experiences. More bad experiences create stronger anger. Over time, both sides become radicalized. There is no simple solution. Society needs to take male loneliness seriously without blaming women, help boys and young men succeed without holding women back, and allow both sexes to speak honestly about the trade-offs created by modern dating. Men should be able to talk about rejection, marriage fears, and loneliness without instantly being called hateful. Women should be able to talk about safety, abuse, and unreliable men without being blamed for everything. Listening does not mean agreeing. It means trying to understand. The crisis of modern dating is not only about sex, love, or relationships. It is also about loneliness, trust, identity, economics, technology, family, purpose, and the future of society. Men and women need each other, but the internet is slowly training both sides to see each other as enemies. The question is no longer only, “Why is dating so difficult?” The bigger question is, “What happens to society when millions of men and women no longer trust each other enough to build a future together?”
